Why do URL's show up in a search engine without a linking?

After viewing a few search engines I have seen URL's (website addresses «laymans language») show without linking to the site mentioned in the search results. I have had to copy and paste many times to get to the desired site instead of using the live link on the search page. I am wondering and asking why and how does this happen in a search engine?
