Up until recently, independent artists and labels often found themselves at a disadvantage. Music distribution and marketing was largely in the hands of major record labels in an offline world and dealt with issues of physical inventory and brick-and-mortar retail outlets. However, this business model is being transformed, now that online music services, such as Apple's iTunes Music Store, have come to the fore. Gartner G2 research director Mike McGuire told MacNewsWorld that the tables slowly are turning as consumers adopt online channels for their music buying.
If you think that ten years ago you had to
1) hire an expensive studio
2) Print CD's
3) Set up a record
4) Get them into shops
Now you can do all of that through your bedroom!
I used www.dittomusic.com who set up a label for me, and then distributed me to iTunes, Spotify etc.
The whole industry is in turmoil but if you are an unsigned artist this is a great time, and the power lies in your hands
