Re: What to Do With That Old iPhone?

First-generation iPhone owners who've upgraded to the new iPhone 3G have a problem on their hands -- what will they do with their old iPhones? The issues surrounding that question involve practicality, friendship, insurance and cold, hard cash. Basically, it comes down to several options, each of which has its own little quirks, pitfalls and opportunities. You can give it away, sell it, jailbreak it or turn it into an iPod touch. The first option is to give your first-generation iPhone away to a friend or family member, and from what I hear, this is one of the more popular solutions.

Selling your iPhone

There's also nftechservices.com, which I sold my iPhone to. Paid $210, which beat secondrotation by $30. Just thought I'd add to the list...

Ummm

Did we really need an article to tell us what to do with an old iPhone? Not to mention, is it really such as huge "problem"? Maxcer you're quite the little drama queen aren't ya?!

The solution

It seems to me like you are a bit of a whiney technology user. wah, I dont want to put in the home stereo because when it rings I have to un plug it, wah the ipod touch has 32 gigs and costs 400 bucks.
haha

Ill tell you exactly what I did.
I am a T-mobile subscriber who had a T-mobile Dash (windows mobile device) before I got my iPhone. A buddy of mine was getting the 3g and the first thing that came out of his mouth was 100$ to which I jumped at and he sold it to me for. I then sold my dash for $150 on ebay and made 50 bucks while getting a better phone. (how about that?)
while my story is not that typical, it could happen to you if you sniff around enough. like you said, a lot of people are tempted to upgrade. For the most part they just want to get rid of the old one easily.

After I got the iPhone, it took me literally 1 hour to find the appropriate steps and software to install a hacked version of iphone 2.0 from my Leopard based Macbook Pro, and bang bang, I'm using a full featured iPhone on a T-Mobile network. I even called tmobile for help getting the internet going and they actually walked me through setting it up on an iPhone! they knew exactly where to put the APN info which was something I had initially overlooked.

Long story short, you really only have 3 options (different ones from yours)

1. Sell it on ebay for $300
2. Unlock it and sell it on ebay for $450

-or-

3. Sell it to your friend for $100 and stop being greedy.

Original iPhone - Still Worth Good $$$

Great story Chris... you read my mind! The 8GB iPhone first gen is still great, worthy as a remote and a iPod touch. But what if one already has a new 3G? Then i feel it's time to give it away, or sell it for a small fortune to help pay the new 3G iPhone bill!
