As Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised earlier this week in his iPod and iTunes-focused music announcements, the iPhone 2.1 software update is now ready for installation by all iPhone owners. The update became available this morning, and Apple even went so far as to post a notice on its home page to alert iPhone owners of the free update. The 2.1 software update is a relatively big chunk of data -- 237.8 MB worth. "It fixes lots of bugs. You'll get fewer call drops. You will get a significantly improved battery life for most customers," Jobs told reporters.

Success with iPhone firmware update 2.1

My significant problems previously were:
1. American Heritage Dictionary (the 29.99 version) kept "bricking" my iPhone (4 times).
2. Slow backing up of the iPhone
3. Inconsistent 3G coverage in Portland, OR

So far (4+ hours later) all the above have been resolved.

However, one problem surprised me. I use VMWare Fusion and it created a problem for me. I had it running when I tried to upgrade to 2.1. Here's what happened: After downloading, the iPhone rebooted, and when it did, the iPhone connected to Windows XP (via Fusion). My install appeared to fail. I "restored" my phone and then all was well.

That's it! I love my iPhone and my 2 MacBook Pro 17" systems!!!!

Thank you Apple!
