Craving the new iPhone 3GS? Apple's newest baby will be faster than ever and offer yet more functionality. If you are already an iPhone 3G devotee, the upgrade will likely cost you $399. If you've been cannily waiting in the wings for the last few years -- expecting that Apple would continue to upgrade its mobile device while dropping the price -- it will cost you a mere $199 or $299, depending on the version you choose. That is, of course, if you opt for a two-year service contract with AT&T. Without it, get ready to plunk down an additional $400.

pay for your iPhone

All you have to do is pay for your iPhone 3g. You bought it at a discount with the promise of a two-year contract. In essence, you are still paying for the 3g phone you have. Why should AT&T pay for the rest of your phone? They are in business to make money, not subsidize your toys. I think it is impressive that they will let you upgrade before the actual end of your full two-year contract. I might be wrong, but I think it's about 18 months. AT&T is giving you what they promised, now give them what you promised. Remember that they had to pay Apple their share up front. It's not like your 3g won't still be the second best phone in the world and you can upgrade in a few months when the dust settles anyway. Gee, poor baby.

NONE of the cell phone or PCS providers in the DC/Baltimore market are worth a darn. I am amazed when I take my AT&T and Verizon cell phones to Las Vegas. Now, tell me, how can they have good coverage in Las Vegas, but not in DC?

Still, Verizon is MUCH better than AT&T in DC. That is why we are FORCED to have iPhones and simple Verizon phones. Sometimes you have to make a call, and only having an iPhone, or any AT&T phone for that matter is going to bite you in the ass.

The same for Verizon. I was working for a company that gave me a Verizon Blackberry. While working in Ohio, I FREQUENTLY had to use my personal AT&T phone for business calls because the Verizon Blackberry had no service.

In DC, T-Mobile seems to have the best coverage. I just cannot believe it. Sprint DATA blows the doors off everyone. Their voice coverage just sucks, but the data card works great.

Don't get me started on NexTel. They are a third world provider. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy -- OK, maybe my WORST enemy, but not a standard one. <ggg>

When there is an iPhone on Verizon (or Sprint) I am GONE from AT&T. I don't care if I just bought the upgraded phone and need to pay the $175 early termination fee. I am GONE.

I am about to go anyway. I am considering getting a T-Mobile phone with the VoIP ability, the $10/month home VoIP, and staying with Verizon as the back up. I am just tired of the lack of coverage, the lack of Customer Service, and the lack of giving a damn that comes from AT&T. It is going to cost me $700 to get out, because we have four phones, but I am just sick of it.

I may sue them to get out though. They are just not providing me with service, especially at my home. I used to have GREAT service at my home, but they had a roaming agreement with T-Mobile at the time. When that went away, so did service. It makes no sense, since they share the monopole!

Apple is doing themselves a real disservice by not having a second provider. Imagine how many MORE phones they could sell if the exclusive provider was not AT&T!

Upset loyal early adopter!

I am quite upset by AT&T's iPhone upgrade eligibility criteria. Help me get AT&T and Apple's attention by reading and sharing this blog post: http://bit.ly/cLPFk

3G (what???)

Here's the deal....my iphone works great as it is now. Quiet honestly, the gentlemen was correct when he stated that although the phone may be designed to be quicker, we are talking AT&T here.... their network is slow and I often get dropped calls. Why would I pay more money for a product that won't deliver because it can't? Further, take note AT&T, just as you have been disloyal to your customers, they may, someday soon, repay the favor. Verizon customer service beats yours all the way around! Hands down, no contest, and I will be keeping it in mind!I am a customer to AT&T only because of the Apple iPhone. I hesitated to buy the iPhone because of your shabby service to begin with! So, you're lucky to have a bunch of us... held like fish on a hook!!

AT&T can shove it

I stood in line for the first iPhone. I stood in line last year for the 3G. I have been a customer of AT&T for the past 6 years. How are they rewarding my loyalty? By offering a discount? By waiving the contract extension?
No. Instead they are charging me a $200.00 premium and forcing me to extend my contract - AGAIN.
The minute AT&T's contract expires, I'm outta here.

Thanks!

Good article! Concise. Precise. And good information.
I actually watched/listened to the WWDC presentation. :o
Double-speed would be nice, but I believe ATT can't even deliver the speed available on the G(S) until 2011.
Besides...next year...?
I'm living with my G for now.
