The US' Perilous Path to Energy Enslavement
September 28, 2009
Hidden in the messaging at the Intel Developer Forum last week was a goal to dramatically lower U.S. electricity bills and save the country from becoming an energy slave to China by 2020. At the core of this is the view that the current Obama administration may be focused on the right things but in the wrong order.
What If Steve Jobs Had Introduced the Zune?
September 21, 2009
Over the years, I've had long "discussions" with Apple fans on why Apple can't actually put Microsoft out of business. Many seem to think the event is imminent, while I clearly believe it is impossible. To make a point like this, however, you need a reverse example, and the new Zune is likely the best product for the purpose.

Starting Over: What Obama's Healthcare Team Could Learn From AMD's 'Vision'
September 14, 2009
You couldn't help but feel for the U.S. president last week as he tried to sell an unpopular health plan. Sometimes you have to realize the foundation of something is just so bad that no amount of patching or selling will fix it, and while it looks like you are close to done, you'd actually get done more quickly if you started over properly.
Palm's Pixi Flits Onto Smartphone Stage
September 09, 2009
Palm is expanding its line of WebOS smartphones -- and ratcheting up competition with Apple -- with the introduction of a new mobile device called the "Pixi." The phone, meant to supplement the more serious Pre smartphone, will be available during the holiday seaon through its exclusive carrier, Sprint.

Is the Internet Killing Critical Thinking?
September 08, 2009
Like Alice's Restaurant in the Arlo Guthrie song, the Internet lets you get anything you want -- from views on politics or science and technology or religion to recipes and gossip. Oh, and of course, news. However, few people do more than skim the surface -- and as they do with newspapers, most people tend to read only what interests them.
Does Green Matter to You?
September 07, 2009
I'm at IFA as I write this, and in Europe, green clearly does matter. Here, they even have a viable Green Party, but in the U.S., I sometimes wonder whether we care. This was showcased in a presentation in which Sony ranked geographical areas in terms of the importance of green, and the U.S. came in last.

Windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard: Inside the War Rooms
August 31, 2009
Apple pushed up its Snow Leopard release by a month to provide a 60-day buffer between it and Microsoft's biggest launch of the decade. Apple can't match either Microsoft's resources or price, but the feat of snagging an unchallenged 60 days during the back-to-school and early holiday shopping season points to Apple's greatest advantage: Its marketing leader is also its CEO.
What Has President Obama Done for Silicon Valley?
August 28, 2009
President Obama's inability to fill even half of his major political appointments is in the news this week, but the appointments he's already made are causing some in Silicon Valley to question whether they supported the right candidate. The president chose non-Silicon-Valley candidates for the nation's two major technology posts.

Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft: World War 3 Cometh
August 17, 2009
Regardless of what I wrote last week, which focused on Apple's problems coming out of the Red Hat event, Apple is on a roll. It's expected to gain substantial share this quarter because Snow Leopard will make it into the quarter and Windows 7 won't. However, in October, Microsoft is planning to come back with a rush, and next year will bring its not-so-secret weapon: the Apple-targeting Microsoft store.
Did Talking on a Cellphone While Driving Get a Bum Rap?
August 17, 2009
It wasn't all that long ago that the talk about cellphones and driving was all talk. That is, consumers, driving-safety advocates, and lawmakers debated whether using a hands-free device was enough to make talking on a cellphone safe, or whether talking on the newly ubiquitous devices while behind the wheel should be banned outright.

Apple and Google on Brain Vacation
August 10, 2009
Summer is a time to relax, a time to take a vacation, a time to do things you can't do during the work year. However, I'm not sure any time is a good time to send your brain on vacation, and I'm starting to wonder if the leaders at Google and Apple have done just that.
Jimmy Wales and the Slippery Slope
August 04, 2009
Jimmy Wales, cofounder of Wikipedia, recently attempted to pressure ECT News Network into killing or drastically revising an article that was not to his liking. In an illuminating series of no fewer than 17 email messages, Wales demanded, threatened, wheedled and implored in a dogged effort to accomplish one thing: to get us to change our story.

Microsoft + Yahoo: Heavenly Marriage, Hellish Divorce?
August 03, 2009
Boy, just when you think it's safe to sleep in, Microsoft and Yahoo decide to hitch up and slap Google upside the head. I'm guessing that this really screwed up the party in the Google 767 flying palace last week. This could be a good thing for Google -- force it to focus. It certainly is good for Microsoft and Yahoo.
I Can Has 4chan? AT&T Lifts Mischief Site's Quarantine
July 27, 2009
Once again, the CEO of a major American company has met an untimely -- and fake -- demise on the pages of CNN's iReport Web site -- and once again, the mischief-making Web site 4chan is suspected of being behind it all. It's likely that excutive Randall Stephenson was selected as the cybervandalism target because his company, AT&T, reportedly denied access to 4chan over the weekend.

Tales From Silicon Valley: The Inside Dope on Apple, OSS, Microsoft and Google
July 27, 2009
I live in Silicon Valley, and sometimes I wonder if someone's putting something in our water. For instance, one of our local folks, who evidently treated his agorophobia by playing "Resistance: Fall of Man," has sued Sony for stealing money from him as a result of Sony's banning him from the game.
Anti-Aging Technology Is No Excuse for Bad Habits
July 24, 2009
For those interested in longevity, July was a good news month. Recently published research in the journal Science shows that caloric restriction helps monkeys live longer and healthier, while a parallel study demonstrated the possibility that a drug could mimic this process.
