I adore Apple's MacBook Air so much I'm starting to think I can live with its shortcomings. At 3 pounds and about as thick as a weekly magazine, this is the most endearing laptop I've ever used. But if you've read anything about this remarkably thin beauty, you know it achieved its fine figure because it lacks an optical disc drive and offers only one USB hub.

Apple's refresh of its MacBook laptop is just that -- a refresh -- and yet, expectations for any new Apple technology run high. Is it much faster than previous generations? Is it a much better buy? Does it include any new software? If a customer already owns a MacBook, is a new MacBook worth buying? Previously, I owned a Titanium PowerBook, followed by an iBook G4, which I replaced with a first-generation MacBook.

Apple has been developing a habit of putting out new stuff each Tuesday. Exactly what it comes out with is almost always a surprise, but since the beginning of the year, it's really taken a toll on the nerves of Apple followers who've been anxiously awaiting a refresh of the MacBook Pro. They finally got their wish; Apple has updated the MacBook Pro and the standard MacBook.
