Google Pours Chrome Into Android

Google has brought its Chrome Web browser to the Android Market. A beta edition of the browser is available from the app shop now for free, but since its operation is restricted to the latest version of the mobile operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, only about 1 percent of Android's millions of users will be able to take the software for a test drive.

A bookmarklet is a bit of code that runs in a Web browser and temporarily enables added functionality. This one adds more social search results to Google's new Search Plus Your World feature.

Microsoft celebrated the demise of Internet Explorer 6 on Tuesday after usage estimates put the Web browser's marketshare at under 1 percent in the U.S. Microsoft was as happy as anyone to see the browser go. The company has been running a kill campaign for IE6 for years, with Microsoft executive Amy Bazdukas stating in 2009 that "friends don't let friends use IE6."

Auto Updates Nudge IE Users Into the Present

Microsoft will automatically upgrade earlier versions of its Internet Explorer browser beginning in January. The updates will be for PCs running Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, Redmond said. Users in Australia and Brazil who have turned on the automatic update feature in Windows Update will be the first to have their browsers automatically updated, and Microsoft will roll out this capability elsewhere over time.

Google showed off the results of its Native Client SDK at an in-house event recently, highlighting some of the ways early adopters such as Square Enix, Unity Technologies and Bungie have used the Web development technology. Google originally launched the Native Client SDK in beta toward the end of last summer in an effort to integrate Web-building tools with compiled code in one easy-to-use browser.

It appears that Google's relatively new Chrome browser has displaced Mozilla Firefox from the No. 2 spot in the worldwide browser market, following leader Microsoft Internet Explorer. "Three years ago, we built Chrome to help spur more innovation on the Web, and we're excited that over 200 million people around the world are using it," Google spokesperson Lily Lin told the E-Commerce Times.

AOL Takes Another Shot at AIM

AOL has updated its longstanding AIM instant messaging service and rolled out a preview for the public. The new AIM automatically displays photos, videos and tweets even when users are writing or reading IMs. It also has a chat feature and syncs messages onto all a user's devices. AIM is available in versions for the Web, Windows PCs and Macs, as well as Android and iOS mobile devices.

Apple Strikes Up Match

Apple has released a new edition of iTunes, version 10.5.1, which includes its belated iTunes Match service. iTunes Match scans a user's library to form a comprehensive list of the user's songs, including music that was not purchased from the Apple iTunes store. If it finds a match in iTunes, Apple then provides the with a cloud-based version of the same song from iTunes.
